January jobless rate up in 1 state; payroll jobs up in 5 states, down in D.C

In January, unemployment rates were higher in 1 state and stable in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 5 states, decreased in the District, and was essentially unchanged in 45 states.

Jobless rates were higher in January than a year earlier in 252 of the 387 metropolitan areas, lower in 101, and unchanged in 34. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 9 areas, decreased in 6, and was essentially unchanged in 372.

Hawaii and South Dakota unemployment rates 2.2 percent in December 2025

In December 2025, Hawaii and South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rates, 2.2 percent each. North Dakota, Vermont, and Alabama also had unemployment rates below 3.0 percent. The District of Columbia had the highest unemployment rate, 6.7 percent. The next highest rates were in California and New Jersey, 5.5 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively. read more »
