August jobless rates down in 8 states; payroll jobs up in 4 states

In August, unemployment rates were lower in 8 states and the District of Columbia
and stable in 42 states. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 4 states and was
essentially unchanged in 46 states and the District.

Jobless rates were lower in August than a year earlier in 234 of the 387 metropolitan
areas, higher in 126, and unchanged in 27. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over
the year in 9 areas, decreased in 5, and was essentially unchanged in 373.

Hawaii and South Dakota unemployment rates 2.2 percent in December 2025
In December 2025, Hawaii and South Dakota had the lowest unemployment rates, 2.2 percent each. North Dakota, Vermont, and Alabama also had unemployment rates below 3.0 percent. The District of Columbia had the highest unemployment rate, 6.7 percent. The next highest rates were in California and New Jersey, 5.5 percent and 5.4 percent, respectively. read more »
