In July, unemployment rates were lower in 2 states, higher in 1 state, and stable in 47 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 4 states and was essentially unchanged in 46 states and the District.

Jobless rates were higher in June than a year earlier in 217 of the 387 metropolitan areas, lower in 147, and unchanged in 23. Nonfarm payroll employment increased over the year in 30 areas and was essentially unchanged in 357.

In 2024, annual average unemployment rates increased in 21 states and were little changed in 29 states and the District of Columbia. Employment-population ratios decreased in 5 states and were little changed in 45 states and the District.
