In August, unemployment rates were higher in 3 states, lower in 2 states, and stable in 45 states and the
District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment increased in 1 state, decreased in the District, and was
essentially unchanged in 49 states.

metropolitan areas, lower in 115, and unchanged in 29. Nonfarm payroll
employment increased over the year in 18 areas, decreased in 1, and was
essentially unchanged in 368.
